VisitMoldova Votes Yes to EU Membership by Razor-Thin Margin Amid Russian Interference Claims
Oct 21, 2024, 09:27 AM
Moldova held a referendum on amending the constitution to support the country's accession to the European Union. Initial results showed a majority against the amendment, but as votes were counted, especially from the diaspora, the "Yes" votes gained momentum. With 99.82% of votes counted, preliminary results indicated that 50.47% of Moldovans voted in favor of joining the EU, while 49.53% voted against, a difference of just a few thousand votes. The close result came amid accusations of "unprecedented" Russian interference in the election process. The high voter turnout exceeded the required 33% to validate the referendum.
