VisitGM Halts Cruise Robotaxi Funding, Shifts to Consumer Autonomous Vehicles
Dec 11, 2024, 05:24 PM
General Motors (GM) has decided to halt the development of its self-driving taxi service, Cruise, and will instead focus its resources on developing autonomous vehicle technology for consumer vehicles. This strategic shift comes after GM invested over $10 billion in Cruise, which had been testing driverless ride-hailing services in San Francisco and other cities. The decision to end funding for the Cruise division was influenced by a grisly crash involving one of its vehicles in San Francisco last year, which led to significant challenges for the company. GM's move is seen as a cost-saving measure and a refocus on partially automated systems for personal vehicles.
