Germany to Extend Border Controls Beyond March 2025, Arresting 1,800 Smugglers and Turning Back 40,000

Germany plans to extend its border controls beyond March 2025 in an effort to combat illegal migration, according to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. The measures have already led to the arrest of approximately 1,800 smugglers and the turning back of around 40,000 individuals at the borders. Faeser stated that these controls are necessary until the protection of the EU's external borders is significantly strengthened. The decision comes amid heightened security concerns following recent attacks and ahead of the February 2025 elections, where immigration and security are central issues.
