VisitEU Considers Sanctions on China Over Drones for Russia from Xinjiang
Nov 15, 2024, 05:41 PM
The European Union has obtained what it considers 'conclusive' evidence that China is producing armed drones for Russia, specifically in the western Xinjiang region. This development marks the first instance of China directly supplying weapons to Russia for its conflict with Ukraine. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has informed member states of this intelligence, leading to discussions on potential sanctions against China at a Monday meeting in Brussels. These sanctions could include business bans, asset freezes, and travel restrictions. An EU official stated it's difficult to believe the production of drones is happening without the knowledge or complete lack of knowledge of the Chinese authorities. The EU is also pressing Beijing for answers regarding the production of these drones, although it remains unclear whether the Chinese government was aware of or approved these activities.
