Jul 13, 2024, 12:50 PM
A violent attempted jailbreak at Mogadishu's central prison on Saturday, July 13, resulted in the deaths of eight people, including five inmates and three guards. The incident began when militant inmates, reportedly associated with the Al-Shabaab jihadist group, obtained weapons including AK47s and launched an attack using pistols and three hand grenades. The Somali Custodial Corps and security forces swiftly responded, neutralizing the threat and killing several inmates. Among the deceased inmates were four individuals on death row and one serving a life sentence. The attack left three guards and 18 inmates injured. The Somali government has identified the militant inmates involved in the attempted jailbreak, and their bodies were displayed.
