Aug 14, 2024, 05:48 PM
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the ongoing mpox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency as of August 14, marking the second time in two years that the virus has been classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The outbreak, which originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has spread to more than a dozen countries across the WHO African Region. The virus has affected both children and adults, and a new strain is reportedly spreading. The declaration follows a continent-wide public health emergency announcement by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
