Jan 16, 2025, 03:33 PM
American qualifier Learner Tien, ranked No.121, stunned fifth seed Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open 2025, advancing to the third round. The 19-year-old defeated the three-time Australian Open finalist with scores of 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 1-6, 7-6(10-7) in a marathon match lasting 4 hours and 48 minutes at Margaret Court Arena, concluding at approximately 2:55 AM in Melbourne. Tien had a match point in the third set tiebreak but could not convert, allowing Medvedev to take the third and fourth sets. In his first-ever five-set match, Tien broke Medvedev when he was serving for the match at 6-5 in the final set, forcing a decisive tiebreak, which he won 10-7. His victory makes him the youngest American to defeat a top-five ATP player at a Grand Slam since 1990. Tien's win reflects a trend at this year's tournament, where several teenagers have defeated top seeds.
