U.S. to Require AEB and Pedestrian Avoidance in All New Cars by 2029, Saving 360 Lives Annually
Apr 30, 2024, 05:10 AM
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that mandates all new passenger cars and light trucks sold in the United States to include automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems by September 2029. This regulation, which also includes pedestrian-collision avoidance systems capable of operating at speeds up to 90mph, aims to enhance road safety by significantly reducing rear-end collisions and pedestrian accidents. The decision, supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, follows a recognized auto safety crisis, with the government emphasizing the potential of AEB technology to save lives and prevent injuries. The NHTSA estimates that the implementation of this rule could prevent approximately 24,000 injuries and save around 360 lives annually.
