US and Canada Sanction Samidoun as Terrorist Organization, Effective October 11
Oct 15, 2024, 03:05 PM
In a coordinated effort, the United States and Canada have sanctioned the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, designating it as a terrorist organization. The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and Public Safety Canada announced the sanctions, labeling Samidoun a sham charity that serves as an international fundraiser for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a designated terrorist organization. The sanctions also target Samidoun activist Khaled Barakat, who is a member of the PFLP. The designation follows recent incidents, including a rally in Vancouver where Samidoun members chanted 'Death to Canada' and burned a Canadian flag. The group, which is a registered Federal not-for-profit NGO and tax-exempt, has been involved in various protests across the U.S. and Canada. The Canadian designation took effect on October 11.
