Sheinbaum Signs Decree to Nationalize Universidad Rosario Castellanos, Benefiting 300,000 Young People
Dec 2, 2024, 02:52 PM
President Claudia Sheinbaum has signed a decree to transform the Universidad Rosario Castellanos into a national university. The institution, which originated in Mexico City, will now expand beyond the capital, with its first campus outside the city to be located in Comitán, Chiapas. The university, under the leadership of Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, currently has 55,738 students, six academic units, six sub-networks, and one distance-learning unit. The initiative aims to provide free higher education to 300,000 young people, emphasizing that education is a right rather than a privilege. The call for student applications, as well as for teaching and administrative staff, will open on December 3, 2024.
