Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Erupts Killing 10, Spews Ash 40,000 Feet, Alert Raised
Nov 4, 2024, 04:19 AM
At least ten people have been killed after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano, also known as Mount Laki-Laki, erupted multiple times overnight on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia. The eruptions spewed fireballs, ash, and lava up to 2,000 meters high, causing significant damage to surrounding villages in the Wulanggitang District. The first eruption lasted 24 minutes, followed by a second three-minute blast. Authorities raised the alert level to the highest tier and evacuated several nearby villages. Volcanic materials burned houses, including a Catholic convent, and blanketed the area with thick ash drifting eastward. The country's Disaster Management Agency reported casualties ranging from six to ten deaths. The volcanology agency warned of potential rain-induced lava floods, and aviation authorities issued a red alert due to ash clouds reaching up to 40,000 feet high.
