Rodrigo Rato Sentenced to 4 Years, 9 Months in Prison and 2 Million Euro Fine for Tax Fraud and Corruption
Dec 20, 2024, 12:17 PM
Rodrigo Rato, the former Spanish Minister of Economy and ex-Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has been sentenced to four years and nine months in prison by the Madrid Provincial Court. The court found him guilty of multiple offenses, including tax fraud, money laundering, and corruption among private individuals. In addition to the prison sentence, Rato has been ordered to pay a fine of two million euros. The ruling comes after a lengthy investigation into the illicit origins of his wealth. Rato, who served under former Prime Minister José María Aznar, has indicated plans to appeal the decision, claiming it is unjust and lacks legal basis.
