Labour Suspends MP Mike Amesbury After CCTV Shows Him Punching Man in Cheshire
Oct 27, 2024, 06:39 PM
Labour MP for Runcorn and Helsby, Mike Amesbury, 55, has reported himself to Cheshire police after being involved in an altercation at approximately 2:48 am on Saturday morning in Frodsham, Cheshire. CCTV footage appears to show Amesbury punching a man to the ground and hitting him multiple times in what some reports describe as an argument over a taxi. In the video, Amesbury is heard shouting, "You won't ever threaten me again," at the man on the ground. Amesbury stated that he felt "threatened" while on a night out with friends and said he would cooperate fully with police if required. Following the emergence of the footage, the Labour Party suspended Amesbury and withdrew the party whip pending an investigation. Cheshire Police confirmed that a 55-year-old man has been voluntarily interviewed under caution in relation to the incident. Labour leader Keir Starmer called the footage "shocking" but declined to say whether Amesbury should resign.
