May 23, 2024, 08:16 AM
Tesla has commenced the construction of a new Megapack factory in Shanghai, marking its first such facility outside the United States. The groundbreaking event took place on Thursday, with the factory expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2025. The Shanghai plant will produce 10,000 Megapacks annually, equating to nearly 40 GWh of energy storage capacity. Tesla China Chief Tom Zhu highlighted the significance of this project, emphasizing Tesla's broader vision of creating sustainable energy solutions beyond electric cars. The factory is located in Shanghai's free trade zone, and the Lingang Group has signed an agreement for the first batch of Megapack batteries. CCTV reported the event, and Cailian quoted Tom Zhu, noting the project as a milestone. Tesla China PR also issued a press release.
