Tesla Breaks Ground on First Megapack Factory Outside US, Operational in 2025
May 23, 2024, 08:33 AM
Tesla has broken ground on a new mega factory in the Shanghai free trade zone to manufacture its energy-storage batteries, known as Megapacks. This facility is the first of its kind outside the United States and is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2025. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 10,000 Megapacks, equivalent to nearly 40 GWh of energy storage. Tesla's China chief, Tom Zhu, highlighted the significance of this project, calling it a milestone for the company. The Shanghai Lingang Group has already signed an agreement to be the first customer of the new factory. Some of the products from the factory will be sourced to China, while the rest will be distributed overseas, according to Tesla Vice President Tao Lin.
