NORAD Intercepts Russian and Chinese Bombers in Alaska ADIZ for First Time
Jul 25, 2024, 03:30 AM
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted two Russian TU-95 and two Chinese H-6 bombers off the coast of Alaska on Wednesday evening. This marks the first time that Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft entered the U.S. Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The bombers were detected and intercepted by American F-16s and F-35s, as well as Canadian CF-18s. The incident occurred prior to President Biden's address and was confirmed by U.S. defense officials as the first coordinated entry of Russian and Chinese military aircraft into the Alaska ADIZ. Despite the unprecedented nature of the event, NORAD stated that the activity is not seen as a threat and will be met with a corresponding presence. Generals Guillot and Nahom briefed officials on the situation. The cooperation between China and Russia in this military maneuver, near the Aleutian Island Chain, indicates a significant strategic collaboration that poses a potential threat to U.S. national security.
