TMC's Kalyan Banerjee Suspended After Smashing Bottle, Injuring Thumb in Waqf Bill Meeting

During a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 in Delhi, held at the Parliament Annexe, a heated exchange occurred between TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay. The confrontation escalated when Banerjee allegedly smashed a glass water bottle on the table, injuring his thumb. According to eyewitnesses, he threw the bottle towards the committee chairman, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal. Following the incident, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi escorted Banerjee out of the meeting. The committee later voted 9-8 to suspend Banerjee for one day due to his unruly conduct. The JPC meeting, chaired by Pal, was temporarily halted but later resumed. According to sources, the altercation began when Banerjee wanted to speak out of turn, leading to objections from Gangopadhyay. The incident highlighted tensions surrounding the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill.
