Iran Executes 1,000 in 2024, Including Women and Minors

Iran executed a record 1,000 individuals in 2024, marking the highest number in three decades, according to reports from opposition groups and human rights organizations. These executions, which included 34 women and 7 minors, took place in 86 prisons across the country. The number represents a 16% increase compared to 2023, when 864 executions were recorded. Nearly 70% of these executions occurred after July under the presidency of Masoud Pezeshkian, with 713 executions during his tenure. Notably, 47% of the executions were carried out in the last three months of the year, reflecting an intensification of the regime's crackdown. On January 1, 2025, 18 additional executions were reported. Baluch prisoners, an oppressed ethnic minority, were disproportionately targeted. The executions have been widely criticized as a tool of political repression, aimed at silencing dissent and intimidating the public. In response, opposition groups and rebellious youth have carried out anti-regime operations in various cities, targeting facilities linked to the Revolutionary Guards and other state security forces. These actions have included explosions and the burning of regime symbols. Human rights advocates, including Maryam Rajavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, have condemned the executions and called for international pressure to halt them. Amnesty International noted that Iran accounted for 74% of all documented executions worldwide in 2023, and the trend appears to have worsened in 2024.
