American Water Works Hit by Cyberattack, Impacting 14 Million Customers
Oct 7, 2024, 04:18 PM
American Water Works, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the United States, announced on Monday that it was the victim of a significant cybersecurity incident. The Camden, New Jersey-based company, which supplies drinking water and wastewater services to more than 14 million people across 14 states and on 18 military installations, reported that hackers had breached its computer networks and systems. The breach was discovered on October 3, prompting the company to disconnect affected systems and warn of potential billing outages. The incident led to the company taking its MyWater customer portal offline. The U.S. government has recently issued growing warnings about state-backed hackers increasingly targeting water infrastructure.
