Gabriel Zuchtriegel Announces Discovery of Largest Roman Bathhouse Ever Found in Pompeii
Jan 17, 2025, 07:20 AM
Archaeologists have unearthed a significant Roman-era find in Pompeii, described as a 'once-in-a-century' discovery by Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. A large private bathhouse, potentially the largest ever found in the ancient city, was discovered hidden beneath volcanic rock and ash for 2,000 years. The bathhouse, part of a grand residence, features hot, warm, and cold rooms, exquisite artwork, and a huge plunge pool capable of accommodating 20-30 people. The excavation, which has been ongoing for the last two years, also revealed two skeletons within the house, providing insights into the lives of Pompeii's inhabitants during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79. The bathhouse complex is believed to have belonged to a wealthy individual, possibly Aulus Rustius Verus, an influential politician in Pompeii.
