Luxurious Private Bathhouse Unearthed in Pompeii, Revealing Gold Coins and Jewelry
Jan 17, 2025, 09:32 AM
Archaeologists have unearthed a significant discovery in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, revealing a luxurious private bathhouse that had been hidden for 2,000 years under volcanic rock and ash. The bathhouse, potentially the largest ever found in Pompeii, features hot, warm, and cold rooms, along with exquisite artwork and a large plunge pool. This spa-like complex is part of a grand residence excavated over the past two years, believed to have belonged to Aulus Rustius Verus, an influential Pompeii politician. The bathhouse's discovery underscores the opulence of the Roman elite, with facilities that could accommodate up to 30 people. The excavation also uncovered two skeletons, a woman aged between 35 and 50 and a younger man, who were trapped and killed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79. Alongside the skeletons, archaeologists found gold and silver coins and jewelry, offering a poignant glimpse into the lives of Pompeii's residents at the time of the disaster.
