37,000-Year-Old Mummified Saber-Toothed Cat Cub Discovered in Siberian Permafrost
Nov 15, 2024, 07:39 PM
Scientists have discovered the mummified remains of a juvenile saber-toothed cat, Homotherium latidens, in the Upper Pleistocene permafrost near the Badyarikha River in the northeast of Yakutia, Russia. The frozen remains, estimated to be around 35,000 to 37,000 years old, are remarkably well-preserved, offering significant insights into the species. This discovery, published in the journal Scientific Reports, marks the first time such remains have been studied in history. Researchers noted significant differences between the saber-toothed cat cub and modern lion cubs.
