Grizzly bear 399, arguably the most famous bear in the world and an ambassador for her species, was struck and killed by a vehicle on Tuesday night, October 22, 2024, in Wyoming. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service confirmed that the iconic 28-year-old grizzly was fatally hit on Highway 26/89 in Snake River Canyon, south of Jackson. As the oldest known reproducing female grizzly in the Yellowstone ecosystem and an iconic mascot of Grand Teton National Park, bear 399 inspired countless visitors, captivating researchers and tourists alike.
