UK Unveils 'Remediation Acceleration Plan' to Remove Cladding by 2029, Warns Owners of Fines and Jail
Dec 2, 2024, 09:23 AM
The UK government has announced the 'Remediation Acceleration Plan' to remove dangerous cladding from all high-rise buildings over 18 meters by the end of 2029. The initiative, unveiled by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Housing Minister Alex Norris, sets tough new targets to accelerate remediation efforts following the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Buildings between 11 and 18 meters must have remediation plans in place by 2029. The government has warned that building owners who fail to comply could face fines or imprisonment, pledging to 'punish freeholders who sit on their hands.' Angela Rayner stated, 'We made a promise we would speed up the removal of unsafe cladding. Today, we act on that promise.' Labour leader Keir Starmer also emphasized his commitment to the issue. This decisive action aims to ensure all residential buildings are safe and to hold building owners accountable for delays.
