UK Government Targets 2029 for Unsafe Cladding Removal, Post-Grenfell
Dec 2, 2024, 07:44 AM
The UK government has announced a new deadline to fix unsafe cladding on residential buildings, setting a target for the completion of remediation work on high-rise buildings by the end of 2029. This initiative comes in response to the Grenfell tragedy, with the government aiming to accelerate the removal of dangerous cladding. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner emphasized the government's commitment to 'decisive action' to ensure the safety of thousands of homes. The plan includes specific targets for buildings above 18 meters to be remediated by 2029, while buildings between 11 and 18 meters must have a remediation plan in place by the same year. Developers are expected to double the pace of remediation, and fines will be imposed on freeholders who delay the process. Housing Minister Alex Norris has not ruled out the possibility of imprisoning non-compliant building owners. This announcement comes 12 years after the Grenfell tragedy, highlighting the urgency of the issue.
