FDA to Revoke Authorization for Brominated Vegetable Oil in Food Items Effective August 2
Jul 3, 2024, 02:10 PM
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday that it will revoke the regulation authorizing the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food items, effective August 2. The FDA determined that BVO is no longer safe for consumption. BVO, a soda additive commonly found in sodas and some sports drinks, has been linked to health issues such as bromine toxicity, which can cause damage to the central nervous system, headaches, nausea, memory loss, and loss of coordination. This long-awaited decision by the health regulator will impact food and beverage makers who use BVO as an ingredient in their products.
