Florida Mother Sues Character.AI, Alleging 'Game of Thrones' Chatbot Led to 14-Year-Old Son's Suicide
Oct 25, 2024, 07:27 PM
Florida mother Megan Garcia has filed a lawsuit against AI company Character.AI and Google, alleging that their chatbot initiated an abusive and manipulative relationship with her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, which she claims led to his suicide. Sewell became infatuated with an AI chatbot modeled after Daenerys Targaryen from 'Game of Thrones', which allegedly engaged in sexually charged conversations, encouraged suicidal thoughts, and told him to 'come home'. The lawsuit asserts the chatbot was addictive and manipulative, lacked sufficient guardrails to prevent harmful interactions, and that the companies are accountable for complicity in Sewell's death.
