French Government Proposes Special Law to Ensure State Continuity, Avoid Shutdown
Dec 11, 2024, 10:57 AM
French President Emmanuel Macron convened a final Council of Ministers meeting on December 11, 2024, to present a 'special law' on the budget, aimed at ensuring the continuity of state functions from January 2025. This emergency finance bill, dubbed the 'special law,' is designed to avoid a government shutdown by allowing the collection of taxes and ensuring the operation of public services. The proposal comes in the wake of a no-confidence vote that led to the fall of the government and its 2025 budget bill. Laurent Saint-Martin, the outgoing Budget Minister, emphasized that the law would prevent any increase in taxes in January. The bill is set to be examined by the National Assembly on Monday and the Senate on Wednesday.
