France Strikes ISIS in Syria for First Time Since Assad's Fall, Drops Seven Bombs on Two Targets
Dec 31, 2024, 11:44 AM
France conducted airstrikes targeting Islamic State (ISIS) positions in Syria, marking the country's first military action in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime on December 8. French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced that the strikes took place on Sunday, involving French air assets that carried out targeted attacks against ISIS sites on Syrian soil. The operation was part of France's ongoing commitment to the international coalition 'Operation Inherent Resolve,' which has been active against ISIS in Iraq since 2014 and in Syria since 2015. Lecornu emphasized that French armed forces remain engaged in the fight against terrorism in the Levant. The strikes involved French Rafale fighter jets and American Reaper drones, which together dropped a total of seven bombs on two military targets of ISIS in central Syria.
