UN Security Council Convenes Emergency Meeting on Syria Following Aleppo Attack
Dec 3, 2024, 08:45 PM
The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session on Tuesday to address the escalating situation in Syria, following a request from the Syrian government. The meeting was prompted by a recent surge in violence, including a terrorist attack in Aleppo, where anti-government forces captured significant areas from government control. During the session, Raed Al Saleh, Director of the White Helmets, reported that attacks by Assad's forces, Russia, and militias in the past six days had resulted in the deaths of at least 100 civilians and injuries to 360 others. He called for the Security Council to work towards ending the crimes and achieving peace in Syria, and urged Russia to cease protecting the Assad regime. The Syrian representative accused armed groups of receiving substantial military support from abroad, while the Turkish representative expressed concerns over the presence of terrorist groups posing a direct threat to Turkey's security. Iran voiced deep concern over the developments, attributing the prolonged crisis to foreign support for armed organizations.
