Hawaii's Second-Largest Volcano Kilauea Erupts from Four Fissures in Remote Area
Jun 3, 2024, 05:36 PM
Kilauea, Hawaii's second-largest and one of the most active volcanoes in the world, began erupting early Monday morning in a remote area within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The eruption started around 12:30 a.m. HST, approximately a mile south of Kilauea caldera and north of the Koa'e fault system and Hilina Pali Road. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the eruption is ongoing but does not pose an immediate threat to human life or critical infrastructure. Lava is fountaining from four fissures, and volcanic gases are being blown downwind. The alert levels for the Island of Hawai'i have been raised to the highest categories. This area last erupted in December 1974. No communities are threatened from lava, although some areas may experience elevated gases.
