Magnitude 6.5-6.6 Earthquake Hits Tonga Islands, No Tsunami Threat

A stronger earthquake with a magnitude ranging from 6.5 to 6.6 struck the Tonga Islands on May 26, 2024. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake, which occurred at a depth of 111 km. Despite the significant magnitude, the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that there is no tsunami threat. No damage has been reported from the preliminary M6.5 earthquake in Tonga.
