An attempted prison break at the Makala prison in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, resulted in the deaths of at least 129 inmates and left 59 others injured. The incident occurred overnight on Sunday, with heavy gunfire reported from the overcrowded facility, which houses up to 15,000 inmates. Many of the fatalities occurred due to a stampede.
