Sudanese Army and Allies Retake Wad Madani, Capital of Al-Jazirah, Amid Celebrations
Jan 11, 2025, 12:22 PM
The Sudanese army, along with allied forces, has successfully regained control of the city of Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazirah state in central Sudan, after over a year of occupation by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The army's advance into Wad Madani was marked by intense battles with the RSF, culminating in the army's entry into the city. Celebrations have erupted across Sudan, including in Wad Madani and Omdurman, as the army and its allies continue to make strategic gains in the region. The army's control extends to key areas such as the Hantoub bridge, crucial for access to Wad Madani, and other strategic locations like the Al-Faoj bridge and Wad Al-Mahiedi bridge. The conflict has led to significant civilian displacement and has been ongoing since mid-April 2023, resulting in over 20,000 deaths and 14 million displaced people according to the United Nations and local authorities.
