Sudan Suspends Hunger Monitoring as Famine Affects 24.6 Million, Spreading to Five More Areas by May 2025

Sudan has suspended its participation in the global hunger-monitoring system ahead of a report that is expected to reveal the expansion of famine across the country. This decision is likely to hinder efforts to combat one of the world's largest hunger crises. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), famine conditions have been identified in at least five areas of Sudan, with projections indicating that another five areas may experience famine by May 2025. The report estimates that approximately 24.6 million Sudanese, nearly half of the population, require urgent food assistance. The ongoing conflict between the military and a paramilitary group has exacerbated the situation, leading to severe hunger and acute malnutrition among the affected populations.
