EU, UK, Canada, and US Sanction Venezuelan Officials Including Caryslia Rodríguez and PDVSA President Over July 28 Election
Jan 10, 2025, 05:04 PM
In response to the ongoing political crisis in Venezuela, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States have imposed new sanctions on officials associated with President Nicolás Maduro's regime. The EU sanctioned 15 Venezuelan officials, including the president of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice, Caryslia Rodríguez, and other high-ranking members of the judiciary and the National Electoral Council, for undermining democracy and the rule of law. The UK also sanctioned 15 individuals linked to Maduro's government, citing human rights violations and actions that undermine democracy. Canada targeted 14 current and former Venezuelan officials involved in human rights abuses and post-election repression following the July 28, 2024 election. The US imposed sanctions on the president of PDVSA and other senior officials following Maduro's inauguration. These measures coincide with Maduro's swearing-in for a third term, amid international criticism of the July 28, 2024, presidential election results.
