Israeli Forces Recover Body of Golani Brigade's Staff Sgt. Oron Shaul from Shejaiya, Held by Hamas Since 2014
Jan 19, 2025, 06:25 AM
Israeli forces have successfully recovered the body of Staff Sgt. Oron Shaul, a member of the Golani Brigade, who was killed and captured by Hamas during the 2014 Gaza war. The operation, conducted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security service, took place in the Gaza Strip before a ceasefire was set to begin. Shaul fell in combat in the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza City on July 20, 2014, during Operation Protective Edge. His body was abducted by Hamas and held for over a decade. The recovery of Shaul's remains was part of a covert, special operation involving special units from the IDF's Military Intelligence Directorate and the Shayetet 13 marine commando unit. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended the operation, and Shaul's family was informed following an identification procedure.
