Israeli Soldier Flees Brazil Amid War Crimes Investigation Following NGO Complaint
Jan 6, 2025, 03:40 AM
A Brazilian federal court has ordered an investigation into an Israeli soldier visiting Brazil for alleged war crimes committed in Gaza, following a complaint filed by the Hind Rajab Foundation. The soldier, who was on vacation in Brazil, is accused of destroying civilian homes in Gaza in November 2024 outside of any combat zone. The court's decision is based on Brazil's status as a signatory to the International Criminal Court. Following the court order, the soldier reportedly fled Brazil with assistance from Israeli authorities. Similar complaints against Israeli soldiers have been filed in other countries, with Israeli media reporting over 50 complaints in 10 nations. In response, Israel has warned its soldiers about the risk of arrest abroad and advised them to avoid posting details of their military service on social media. The case has led to diplomatic tensions between Israel and Brazil, with Israeli officials criticizing the Brazilian government's actions.
