Jury Deliberations Begin in Daniel Penny's Trial Over Jordan Neely's Subway Chokehold Death
Dec 3, 2024, 01:50 AM
Closing arguments were presented in the trial of Daniel Penny, a former Marine veteran charged with manslaughter and negligent homicide in the May 2023 death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man, on a New York City subway. Penny pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege that Penny recklessly choked Neely to death after an outburst on the train, showing indifference by holding him in a chokehold for an excessive amount of time. Defense attorney Steven Raiser argued that Penny acted to protect fellow passengers when Neely became aggressive, and that he 'acted when others could not.' Protesters outside the court greeted Penny with chants of 'Guilty!' as he arrived. Jury deliberations are expected to begin Tuesday, and the 12-person jury will decide whether Penny acted in self-defense or used excessive force.
