EU and UK Sanction 15 Venezuelan Officials for Human Rights Violations and Undermining Democracy
Jan 10, 2025, 03:50 PM
The European Union has imposed sanctions on 15 additional Venezuelan officials associated with President Nicolás Maduro's regime, including Caryslia Rodríguez, the president of the Supreme Court, for their involvement in undermining democracy and human rights violations. The sanctions come in response to the lack of progress towards a dialogue in Venezuela and the absence of a democratic transition. The UK has also announced sanctions against 15 Venezuelan officials, including judges and security forces members, for similar reasons following Maduro's inauguration. The EU and UK actions are part of a broader international response to the political crisis in Venezuela, where Maduro's legitimacy as president is questioned due to the lack of transparency in the electoral process. The sanctions also target individuals involved in the persecution of opposition figures such as María Corina Machado and Edmundo González.
