U.S. Navy F/A-18F Shot Down by USS Gettysburg in Red Sea Friendly Fire Incident
Dec 22, 2024, 03:43 AM
A U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman was accidentally shot down over the Red Sea early Sunday at approximately 3 a.m. local time in an apparent friendly fire incident, according to U.S. Central Command. The fighter jet was mistakenly fired upon by the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, which is part of the same carrier strike group. Both pilots ejected safely and were recovered, with one sustaining minor injuries. The incident, occurring during airstrikes against Yemen's Houthi rebels, marks the most serious threat to U.S. troops in over a year of operations targeting the rebels. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the mishap.
