Myanmar Military Airstrike Kills 41 Civilians, Wounds 52, Mostly Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State
Jan 9, 2025, 01:02 PM
An airstrike by Myanmar's military on a village in western Rakhine state has resulted in the deaths of at least 41 civilians and injured 52 others, according to officials from an ethnic minority group and a local charity. The attack occurred on Wednesday in Kyauk Ni Maw village on Ramree island, an area controlled by the Arakan Army. The bombing triggered a fire that destroyed more than 500 houses. The military has not announced any attack in the area, and the situation remains unconfirmed due to limited internet and cellphone service. The Arakan Army, engaged in conflict with the military, reported that the airstrike targeted the village's market, killing civilians including women and children, most of them Rohingya Muslims. The conflict in Myanmar has intensified since the military coup in February 2021, leading to widespread violence and displacement across the country. Arakan Princess Media also reported the attack, showing photos of residents attempting to extinguish fires at their homes.
