Biden's AI Chip Export Controls Criticized by Nvidia VP Ned Finkle and Robert C. O'Brien, Potentially Benefiting Huawei
Jan 13, 2025, 10:11 AM
The Biden administration is set to introduce new export control regulations targeting artificial intelligence (AI) chips, specifically affecting Nvidia Corp. The upcoming 'Export Control Framework for Artificial Intelligence Diffusion' has drawn sharp criticism from Nvidia, with its Vice President of Government Affairs, Ned Finkle, arguing that the rule could undermine U.S. leadership in AI and stifle global innovation. Finkle stated that the regulation, expected to be published soon, threatens to derail economic growth worldwide and impose bureaucratic control over the design and marketing of American semiconductors and related technologies. The Semiconductor Industry Association has also expressed concerns about the potential impact on the AI landscape and the semiconductor industry. In response to the proposed restrictions, Nvidia's stock, along with other semiconductor companies like Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, and Micron Technology, experienced declines in premarket trading. Robert C. O'Brien, former U.S. National Security Advisor, criticized the move as a last-minute effort by the Biden administration to undermine American technological competitiveness, potentially benefiting Chinese companies like Huawei.
