CDC Reports 'Dual Mutant' Tamiflu-Resistant H1N1 Flu Strains in U.S. Patients
Jun 13, 2024, 01:37 PM
At least two human cases of the new 'dual mutant' strains of H1N1 influenza have been detected in U.S. patients, the CDC reported. These strains, first detected in May 2023 from Canada, have genetic changes that could reduce the effectiveness of the main flu antiviral, Tamiflu (oseltamivir). The mutations, identified as neuraminidase I223V and S247N, were found in patients from Michigan and Connecticut. The CDC warns that these 'dual mutant' flu strains are resistant to some commonly used antiviral drugs, posing a potential challenge for treatment. The findings were published in EIDjournal and LancetMicrobe.
