H5N1 Bird Flu Detected in U.S. Dairy Cows and Store Milk, Raises Global Concerns as Sales Increase 21% to 65%
May 22, 2024, 09:33 AM
A deadly strain of avian influenza, H5N1, has been detected in various mammal species, including dairy cows in the United States. Over 40 new non-avian mammals have tested positive for the virus in recent years. The virus has also been found in store milk, indicating potential contamination through milking equipment. U.S. regulators have tested dairy products from retail stores in 17 states for the virus. The outbreak has raised concerns about exposure among farm workers, who are often uninsured and have limited English proficiency. In Australia, avian influenza has been detected on an egg farm near Melbourne, but preliminary tests show it is not the same strain as the one affecting U.S. dairy cows. Scientists warn that the virus may soon reach Australia. Despite the presence of H5N1 in cows, there is no efficient human-to-human transmission yet, and vaccines are available if needed. The virus has prompted discussions about the need for enhanced surveillance and potential vaccination of cows to prevent further spread. A sample of the virus has been flown to Porton Down in the UK for testing under strict security. Since March 25, weekly sales of raw cow's milk have increased by 21% to 65% compared to the same periods a year ago.
