DC U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves, Biden Appointee, to Resign January 16, 2025, Amid Violent Crime Decrease

Matthew M. Graves, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, has announced his resignation effective January 16, 2025, just days before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. Graves, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, has served in the role since being sworn in on November 5, 2021. During his tenure, the District of Columbia achieved its lowest level of violent crime in over 50 years in 2024, with a 35% year-over-year decrease. Graves led significant efforts to address violent crime, including implementing a data-driven approach to target violent offenders and reduce gun and drug-related violence. He also oversaw the largest investigation in Department of Justice history related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, resulting in charges against approximately 1,600 individuals, with nearly 1,100 sentenced. Upon his departure, Bridget M. Fitzpatrick, the Principal Assistant U.S. Attorney, will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney.
