Biden-Appointed DC US Attorney Matthew Graves Resigns Amid January 6 and Bitfinex Hack Investigations

Matthew M. Graves, the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia appointed by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate in October 2021, has announced his resignation effective January 16, 2025, after serving over three years in the position. Graves led significant investigations including the largest Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He also oversaw other notable cases such as the largest cryptocurrency seizure in DOJ history from the Bitfinex hack, and prosecutions related to illegal tobacco sales to North Korea, among others. Bridget M. Fitzpatrick, the Principal Assistant United States Attorney, will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney following Graves' departure.
