German Chancellor Scholz Loses Confidence Vote; Government Collapses, Elections Set for February 23, 2025

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has lost a confidence vote in the Bundestag, paving the way for early elections on February 23, 2025. Only 207 out of 717 members of parliament backed him, triggering the dissolution of parliament and effectively ending his tenure as chancellor. The no-confidence vote follows the collapse of his three-party coalition government amid declining popularity of his Social Democratic Party (SPD).
