Netanyahu Seizes Golan Buffer Zone After Assad Regime Collapse, Declares 1974 Agreement Over
Dec 8, 2024, 03:19 PM
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli forces have seized control of the buffer zone in the Golan Heights, following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria. Netanyahu declared that the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which had maintained peace for 50 years, has collapsed as Syrian soldiers abandoned their positions. "We will not allow any enemy force to be stationed on our borders," he stated. Netanyahu instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to secure the buffer zone and adjacent strategic positions, including command posts. The move aims to prevent hostile forces from establishing a presence near Israel's borders amid the unrest in Syria.
