Rafael Louzán Elected RFEF President with 90 Votes Amid Pending Supreme Court Appeal
Dec 16, 2024, 01:28 PM
Rafael Louzán has been elected as the new president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), securing 90 votes against Salvador Gomar's 43 from a total of 138 assembly members in today's elections in Las Rozas. The third candidate, Francisco Merchán, withdrew just before the voting commenced. Louzán, president of the Galician Football Federation and a prominent figure associated with Alberto Núñez Feijóo, will lead the RFEF until 2028. His election comes amidst controversy due to his conviction for prevarication, with a pending appeal to the Supreme Court scheduled for February 5. Despite this, he aims to bring peace and stability to Spanish football, proposing initiatives such as an OTT platform for non-professional football and futsal, an office for clubs and federated members, and hosting the "best World Cup in history." Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, has expressed satisfaction with Louzán's appointment.
